What the filter does to the water

Tap water is usually close to neutral, around pH 7, with whatever mineral content your municipality happens to deliver. As water passes through this cartridge, three things happen in sequence.

First, activated carbon reduces chlorine taste and odor, the flat, faintly chemical note most tap water carries. Second, an ion exchange stage adds calcium and magnesium, the same minerals that give good spring water its taste. Third, a magnesium mineral bed raises pH into the alkaline range.
