Do Brita® filters remove PFAS? What the certifications actually say

PFAS have moved from an obscure chemistry term to a headline word, and a common question follows: does the pitcher filter in my fridge deal with them? It is a fair question, and it deserves a direct answer rather than marketing fog. The short version: standard carbon pitcher filters are not certified for PFAS reduction, and if PFAS is your concern you should shop specifically for equipment that is.

What PFAS are

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS for short, are a large family of synthetic chemicals manufactured since the 1940s. They resist heat, water, and oil, which made them useful in nonstick cookware, stain repellents, food packaging, and firefighting foam. The same durability makes them persist in the environment and in the human body, which is why they are often called forever chemicals.

Why regulators are paying attention

PFAS reach drinking water through industrial discharges, landfills, sites where firefighting foam was used, and wastewater. In 2024 the EPA finalized the first enforceable national limits for several PFAS compounds in drinking water, citing research that links long-term exposure to a range of health concerns. Utilities are now on a multi-year path to test for and reduce these compounds.

The direct answer on pitcher filters

Standard Brita® cartridges are certified around chlorine taste and odor and certain other contaminants, and Brita® does not claim PFAS removal for its standard filters. The same honest framing applies to our own alkaline cartridge: it is not certified for PFAS reduction, and we do not claim otherwise. If any filter's packaging implies PFAS removal, look for the certification behind the claim; without one, treat the claim as unproven.

What to look for if PFAS is a concern

Certification bodies test filters against specific standards. For PFAS, look for products certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 with an explicit PFOA and PFOS reduction claim, and read the performance data sheet to see which compounds were tested. Reverse osmosis systems are the most common certified option for the home. Certified carbon-based systems exist as well, but the certification, not the carbon, is what tells you a product does the job.

Find out before you filter

Start with information rather than equipment. Your utility's annual water quality report lists what has been detected in your system, state environmental agencies publish PFAS testing results in many areas, and certified laboratories can test private wells. If your water shows no meaningful PFAS detections, your filtering decisions can stay focused on taste.

Reducing exposure beyond the tap

Drinking water is only one route. If you want to reduce PFAS exposure generally, practical steps include cooking with stainless steel or cast iron, being selective about grease-resistant food packaging, and checking whether water-resistant textiles are labeled PFAS-free.

The bottom line

No pitcher filter should be your PFAS plan. Use a pitcher filter, ours included, for what it is designed to do: better tasting water. For PFAS, get data on your water first, then buy treatment certified for the job.
