How to choose the right replacement filter for your Brita® pitcher

A pitcher filter is only as good as the cartridge inside it. Carbon media saturates with use, flow slows down, and the chlorine taste you bought the pitcher to escape starts creeping back. Choosing the right replacement filter, and changing it on schedule, matters more than most people realize.

Start with your pitcher model

Replacement cartridges are shaped for specific pitcher families, so the first step is simple: confirm your model. Brita® has sold many pitcher designs over the years, from compact models to large dispensers, and cartridge formats differ between them. The model name is usually printed on the lid or the base. Reputable cartridges list the pitcher models they fit; check that list before you buy, whether you are shopping from Brita® or from a compatible brand.

Know what a filter is certified to do

Marketing copy and certification are different things. In the United States, drinking water filters are tested against NSF/ANSI standards. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants such as lead. If a specific contaminant matters to you, do not rely on a headline claim. Look up the manufacturer's performance data sheet and confirm which standard the cartridge is certified against and for which contaminants. Different cartridges within the same brand often carry different certifications.

Follow the replacement schedule

Brita® suggests replacing its standard cartridges roughly every 40 gallons, which works out to about two months for a typical household, and other cartridge types have their own intervals. Whatever filter you use, follow the maker's stated cadence. An expired carbon filter does not simply stop working; water keeps flowing through it while the filter does less and less.

Watch for the warning signs

Even with a calendar reminder, it helps to know the symptoms of a spent cartridge. Water flows noticeably slower. The taste or smell of chlorine returns. Some pitchers include an electronic change indicator, which is useful but no substitute for paying attention to taste and flow.
