Alkaline water filters: what they do and what they do not
Walk down any water aisle and you will see the word alkaline on bottles, pitchers, and filter cartridges. The idea is simple enough. Water sits somewhere on the pH scale, and alkaline water is water that measures above the neutral point of 7. But the marketing around it can get ahead of the facts, so it is worth slowing down and looking at what these filters actually do.
What alkaline water is
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a liquid is, running from 0 to 14 with 7 as neutral. Plain tap water is usually close to neutral, though it varies by region and by what the water picked up on its way to your faucet. Alkaline water measures above 7, often because it carries dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Naturally mineral-rich spring water is alkaline for exactly that reason.
How alkaline pitcher filters work
An alkaline pitcher filter does two jobs. First, it filters. Activated carbon reduces chlorine taste and odor, which is the most common complaint people have about municipal tap water. Second, it remineralizes. As water passes through the cartridge, mineral media add calcium and magnesium, which raises the pH into the alkaline range. The result is water that many people find smoother and cleaner tasting than what comes out of the tap.
What about the health claims?
This is where caution is warranted. Alkaline water is often sold with sweeping health claims. The honest summary is that the scientific evidence behind those claims is limited, and no regulator has recognized alkaline water as a treatment or prevention for any condition. Drinking water keeps you hydrated whatever its pH, and your body regulates its own chemistry tightly regardless of what you drink. Alkaline filters versus reverse osmosis
The two are sometimes pitched as rivals, but they solve different problems. Reverse osmosis systems force water through a fine membrane and strip out most of what is dissolved in it, minerals included, which is why many RO systems add a remineralization stage afterward. An alkaline pitcher filter is a lighter tool. It is not certified to remove health-related contaminants, and it should not be treated as a substitute for certified treatment where a water test shows one is needed. What it offers is convenience: better taste and added minerals from the pitcher you already own.
Practical things to weigh
A few questions make the decision easier. Do you like the taste of mineral-rich water? Is your tap water already in good shape, so that taste and minerals are the main goals?
